Suarez fires Uruguay into WC quarterfinals

06/26/2010 - Port Elizabeth, South Africa (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Luis Suarez scored a goal in each half, including a spectacular winner 10 minutes from time, as Uruguay advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win over South Korea at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Suarez opened the scoring after eight minutes, but Lee Chung-Yong equalized in the 68th minute for the South Koreans after a good spell of pressure to start the second half.

However, Suarez helped Uruguay reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1970 when he collected the ball inside the penalty area on the right and curled a brilliant shot off the far post and into the net.

Uruguay's quarterfinal match on July 2 will be against the winner of Saturday's other round of 16 contest between the United States and Ghana.

South Korea came within inches of taking an early lead when Park Chu-Young curled a free kick off the post in the fifth minute, but it was Uruguay that seized the advantage three minutes later.

A low cross from Diego Forlan managed to skip through the face of goal and past South Korea goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong, who should have done better to stop it. However, the ball arrived at the back post to Suarez and he finished off the play from a tight angle.

Uruguay had a penalty appeal turned down shortly before halftime when a volley from Maxi Pereira struck the arm of a Korean defender, but the referee wasn't interested.

South Korea went on the attack at the start of the second half and Park Chu- Young should have done better from 10 yards when he fired over the net.

Park Ji-Sung then forced a diving save from Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with a header from the middle of the box, but the equalizer came 10 minutes later.

A free kick was swung into the middle of the box and it redirected into the path of Lee Chung-Young, who beat the goalkeeper to the ball and headed it home.

Suarez wasted a free header from eight yards, but he atoned for the miss minutes later with a fantastic strike from inside the area.

The Asian side had one final chance to extend the game four minutes from time when substitute Lee Dong-Gook got into the area and drove a low shot toward the goal that Muslera got just enough of to keep out.
