08/15/2007 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Appearing in her first tournament since a quarterfinal loss to Venus Williams at Wimbledon last month, No. 3 Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova held off Italian Roberta Vinci 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) in second- round action Tuesday at the $1.34 million Rogers Cup.

Kuznetsova will face the winner of Wednesday's match between No. 16 Lucie Safarova and Meghann Shaughnessy of America on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre on the campus of York University.

Eleventh-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer was an easy winner, as the world No. 18 pasted Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 6-2 at this U.S. Open Series tennis event.

A second-round upset occurred when Chinese Shuai Peng toppled 14th-seeded Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 6-1, 4-2, as Srebotnik retired due to a viral illness.

A first-round upset came when Italian qualifier Maria Elena Camerin cut down rising 15th-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-4, 6-3. Thirteenth-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer avoided an upset by dousing France's Emilie Loit 6-1, 6-2.

Capable Russian Maria Kirilenko cruised into the second round by erasing German Martina Muller 6-1, 6-3. Kirilenko will encounter seventh-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli, of France, here on Wednesday.

Additional opening-round wins came for Canadian wild card Stephanie Dubois, Shaughnessy, Greek Eleni Daniilidou, Frenchwomen Nathalie Dechy and Virginie Razzano and Slovenian qualifier Andreja Klepac, who handled American Meilen Tu in straight sets and is rewarded with a second-round match against top-seeded Belgian stalwart Justine Henin. Marie-Eve Pelletier rallied past Ekaterina Shulaeva, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in an all-Canadian nightcap.

Serbian Ana Ivanovic defeated Swiss Martina Hingis in last year's Rogers Cup finale in Montreal. This event shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.

The new world No. 4 Ivanovic, seeded fourth this week, is fresh off her big title in Los Angeles last week.

This week's top seeds are Henin and Serb Jelena Jankovic. The world No. 1 Henin is the reigning French Open champ and U.S. Open runner-up. She captured this Canadian event in 2003 and was the runner-up in Toronto in 2005.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
