Almagro eases into Valencia semis

Tennis Betting Lines

04/13/2007 - Valencia, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Spanish favorite Nicolas Almagro is two victories away from successfully defending his title at the clay-court Valencia Open.

A third-seeded Almagro was leading seventh-seeded Filippo Volandri 6-3, 1-0 when the Italian retired due to a stomach illness at CT Valencia. Almagro is the only seed still standing this week.

The 21-year-old Almagro, who beat Frenchman Gilles Simon in last year's finale here, will face his fellow Spaniard Santiago Ventura on Saturday. Ventura got past his compatriot Alberto Martin 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 on Day 5. The wild card Ventura and Martin were interrupted by a rain delay in the second set of their quarterfinal showdown.

Ventura is 2-1 lifetime against Almagro on the ATP circuit, all on red clay, with the wins coming in their last two matchups back in 2005.

Saturday's other semi will pit Spanish lucky-loser Ivan Navarro Pastor against Italian Potito Starace. Navarro Pastor pasted Russian Evgeny Korolev 6-3, 6-1, while Starace stopped Spanish qualifier Marcel Granollers-Pujol 6-4, 6-4.

The 2007 Valencia titlist will earn $78,600.
